Funeral services for Sammy Joe Johnson, 75, of Lufkin, will be held Monday, March 18, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin with Bro. Chris Rhodes, Bro. Mike Fowler, and Sammy Joe Johnson II officiating. Interment will follow at Rocky Hill Cemetery.
Sammy Joe Johnson was born on November 3, 1948, in Camden, Texas, and passed away at his home in Lufkin, Texas on March 13, 2024. His death was the result of a long battle with emphysema.
Smoking made Sam old before his time, but prior to his illness, he was hardworking and adventurous. As a young man, he never sat still. If the sun was up, Sam was working on something. He retired from Angelina Glass where he worked for over 20 years. However, a lifetime of work experience gave him a broad knowledge of different skills, including construction, glazing, truck driving, auto mechanics, and auto restoration.
Sam had enjoyed bass fishing, working on classic cars, dancing, and socializing with friends. Later in life, he loved playing with his great-grandchildren and attending church functions with his wife and friends at The Foundry Assembly of God. If you knew Sam, you know he loved to tell stories, joke, and laugh. He was fun loving and easy going his entire life.
Sam is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susie (Mann) Johnson; daughter and husband, Lisa Dianne and Terry Moreland; son, Michael Johnson; son and wife, Edward and Shannon Belyeu; son and wife, Sam and Brenda Johnson; granddaughter, Heather Johnson; granddaughter, Shalia Tubbs; grandson and wife, Andrew and Viana Tubbs; granddaughter and husband, Rose and Austin Newland; grandson and wife, Drew and Samantha Moats; granddaughter and husband, Christie and Mark Barnes; and 18 great-grandchildren. If you wanted to see him light up, just bring some of those great-grandchildren to visit him!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Addie Johnson; brother, Doug Johnson; and daughter, Candace Grimes.
Pallbearers will be Wes Young, Dane Young, Chris Lucas, Richard Shade, Austin Newland, and Mike Love.
Honorary pallbearers Dennis Curtsinger, Troy Smith, and Jim Atteberry.
