Jay Michael Childers

          Funeral services for Jay Michael Childers, 35, of Henderson, Nevada, will be held Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin with Dr. John Greene officiating. Interment will follow at Whitehouse Cemetery.

          Jay was born September 9, 1983 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of Jimmy Ray Childers and Diana (Johnson) Renfroe, and died Friday, June 7, 2019 in Henderson, Nevada.

          Jay was born in Lufkin, Texas and raised in Reno, Nevada. He spent the last 15 years in Las Vegas, after graduating from UNLV with his undergraduate degree. Jay went on to receive master’s degrees from UNLV and Arizona State University. He was an accomplished outdoorsman who owned and operated a hiking tourism company in Las Vegas. Jay was a collegiate golfer, a member of the Professional Golf Association, and a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan. He was a beloved son and brother and loved his nieces and nephew very much. Jay would send them numerous postcards from all of his various travels. He also loved his dogs, Cowboy and Rowdy very much. Jay was extremely giving of his time and enjoyed volunteering. He was a true friend that was always ready to help and serve others. Jay loved to laugh and lived for a good adventure.

          He is survived by his mother and husband, Diana (Johnson) and Royce Renfroe of Reno, NV; father and wife, Jimmy and Emily (Terrill) Childers of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Kristi and Jared McCurley of Houston; sister and brother-in-law, Mieka McGhin and Danny Martin of Reno, NV; brother, Trey McGhin of Ft. Worth; brother and sister-in-law, John Clinton and Deanna Diann Childers of Pollok; sister, Kelley Joyce Childers of Dallas; aunt and husband, Joyce (Johnson) Bemus and Mike Bemus of Lufkin; nieces, Taylor and Avery McCurley of Houston; nephew, Landon Martin of Reno, NV; niece, Claire Childers of Pollok; cousin and husband, Jennifer and Rob McCarroll of Lufkin; cousin and husband, Jaime and Larry Landrum; girlfriend, Joanna Johnson of Las Vegas, NV; and dogs, Cowboy and Rowdy.

          Jay was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Marie Johnson and Lillian Childers; grandfathers, Jimmy Johnson and Johnnie Childers; and uncles, Jerry Johnson and Johnny Wayne Childers.

          Pallbearers will be Clint Childers, Danny Martin, Jared McCurley, Jim McGhin, Trey McGhin, and Mike Vollmer.
