Funeral services for Dewey M. Matchett, 84, of Lufkin, will be held Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin with Bro. Wesley Matchett officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellow Cemetery in Lufkin.

         Mr. Matchett was born on February 12, 1942, in Lufkin, Texas, to the late William Dewey Matchett and the late Margaret (Lynn) Matchett, and died Monday, May 11, 2026 at home, surrounded by family.

         Dewey spent his early life serving in the United States Navy and drove a truck for Red Ball Motor Freight in the years following his military service. Later in life, he worked with his brother, David, as a logger, and eventually retired from Temple-Inland. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and loved fishing and hunting. Dewey was a talented farmer and gardener who took great pride in growing lots of peas, corn and green beans which he generously shared with everyone. He loved to race boats and was involved in boat races at the Ellen Trout Zoo during the annual Independence Day celebration show. He also had a tendency to make a homemade beverage from time to time. He will be dearly missed.

         He is survived by his wife, Leona Matchett of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jana Matchett of Ratcliff, Texas; grandson and wife, Justin and Courtney Matchett of Pollok, Texas; grandson and wife, Jacob and Nicole Matchett of Long Branch, Texas; grandson, Derek Pate of Lufkin; great-grandson, Hunter Matchett; great-grandson, Mason Matchett; great-grandson, Layton Matchett; great-granddaughter, Haylie Dorcz; great-granddaughter, Madyson Dorcz; great-grandson, Braxton Dorcz; great-grandson, Decklynn Matchett; great-granddaughter, Kylie Matchett; great-granddaughter, Kinsleigh Terry; and numerous nieces and nephews.

         Mr. Matchett was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Johnnie Matchett; brother, Franklin Matchett; brother, David Matchett; wife, Betty; and wife, Melba.

         Pallbearers will be Justin Matchett, Jacob Matchett, Hunter Matchett, Decklynn Matchett, Robert Serpas, and Roger Martin.

         Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Joe Taylor, Jerry Matchett, Chris Duncan, and Derek Pate.

         Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Shafer Funeral Home.
