Gary G. Smiley Obituary

Gary G. Smiley, 87, of Lufkin, was born January 1, 1937, in Golden, Texas, to the late Rufus Glenn Smiley and Mozelle (Dowell) Smiley, and died Friday, March 1, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Smiley proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of First Christian Church in Lufkin. After 26 years, he retired from Kraft Heinz Company as an account executive, dealing mainly with Brookshire Brothers. Mr. Smiley was a 32 Degree Mason, Knights Templar, and a member of the Sharon Shriners Lodge in Tyler, Texas. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and especially loved Wingshooting. Mr. Smiley had a love for the outdoors and was an excellent marksman and true sportsman. He had a general love for all animals, and for many years raised and trained horses. Gary’s training of horses was through respect and love – he never had to show anger, instead he showed love and gentleness. In his later years, Mr. Smiley was very fond of taking pictures of various wildlife and animals.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Glenda Smiley of Lufkin; sister, Gail Alston of Maumelle, Arkansas; niece, Leslie Michel-Alston of Maumelle, Arkansas; nephew, wife and family, Eric Alston of Donaldson, Arkansas; special friends, Judy Dixon, Jerri Shea, and Doug and Patty McKamie; along with his fur baby, Lily.

Mr. Smiley was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Harbor Hospice for their special care.

Special memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 1300 S. First St., Lufkin, Texas 75901.
