Funeral services for Gayland Wallace, 88, of Lufkin, will be held Monday, January 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin with Bro. Mark Forrest and Bro. Keith Woolf officiating. Interment will follow at Berry Cemetery in Lufkin.
Mr. Wallace was born on August 5, 1935, in Lufkin, Texas, to the late Wayne Holleman Wallace and Yule (Sessions) Wallace, and died Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at his residence.
Mr. Wallace was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and lived by his faith. He was an avid coon hunter and a jack of all trades and master of all. Mr. Wallace was a loving husband, father, pawpaw, and friend. He never met a stranger. Mr. Wallace enjoyed singing and playing the drums.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine Wallace of Lufkin; daughter, Jana Hutchison Tomez of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Foy and Yvette Wallace of Corpus Christi; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; special nieces, Phyllis Ann Barfield and Gina Puryear; along with numerous nieces and nephews; and his mule, Kate.
Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Wayne Wallace; daughter, Debra Gail Tomon; son-in-law, Ray Tomez; brother, Lonnie Wallace; sisters, Glenda Draper and Dean Wallace; great-niece, Melissa Rene Simmons; and great-nephew, Randy Draper.
Pallbearers will be Edwin Parker, Frank Lockey, Delbert Reynolds, Tommy Miller, Tom Hutchison, Steve Hutchison, and Jake Flowers
Honorary pallbearers will be John Berry, Charles D. Mills, and Bobby Barfield.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Harbor Hospice, nurse Tracy and nurse aide Tandra.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2024, at Shafer Funeral Home, prior to the funeral service.
