Funeral services for Juan Alberto Mijares, 83, of Lufkin, will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Emanuel Assembly of God in Lufkin with Rev. Sonia Bermudez officiating. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park in Lufkin.
Mr. Mijares was born on April 14, 1940, in San Pedro, Coahuila, Mexico, to the late Alberto Mijares, Sr. and Mariana (Gomez) Mijares, and died Monday, January 29, 2024, in Lufkin.
Mr. Mijares was a member of Emanuel Assembly of God Church in Lufkin, and his faith and church were very important to him. He and his wife were the founding members of the church in 1971, which was also the first Hispanic church in this area. Mr. Mijares was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed watching baseball, and watching his grandkids and great grandkids play sports. Mr. Mijares loved spending time with his family, going to the lake, and cooking out.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maria Luisa Mijares of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Juan Jose and Mary Mijares of Lufkin; son, Marco Antonio Mijares of Lufkin; son, Miguel Angel Mijares of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Ana Luisa and Jesus Villanueva, Jr. of Diboll; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Juan Lopez of Lufkin; granddaughter and husband, Shana and Travis Hamilton of Missouri; grandson, J.J. Mijares of Lufkin; grandson and wife, Gaspy and Ari Mijares of Diboll; granddaughter and husband, Christy and Zach Sturns of Diboll; grandson and wife, Eric and Jasmine Mijares of Nacogdoches; granddaughter and husband, Jennifer and Mark Diaz of Nacogdoches; grandson and wife, Jesus and Ashlee Villanueva III of Diboll; granddaughter, Alexis Lopez of Washington D.C.; granddaughter, Sara Mijares and fiancé Damarco Dudley of Houston; granddaughter, Eliana Lopez of Lufkin; granddaughter, Josie Mijares of Nacogdoches; 13 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Santos and Florinda Mijares of Eagle Pass, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Alberto and Santa Mijares of Lufkin; brother, Antonio Mijares of Piedras Negras, Mexico; sister-in-law, Zulema Mijares of Lufkin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Juilian and Ana Bermudez of Sherman, TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cesar and Mary Bermudez of Lufkin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Maria Isabel and Gerardo Rubio of Houston; sister-in-law, Elsa Bermudez of Lufkin; sister-in-law, Genoveva Bermudez of Lufkin; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mijares was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rosa Lopez, Irene Ramirez, and Consuelo Mijares; brother, Saul Mijares; grandson, Robert Villanueva; sister-in-law, Gloria Mijares; brothers-in-law, Arnulfo Bermudez, Carlos Bermudez, and Ismael Bermudez; sisters-in-law, Maria Reyes and Martha Jasso; and parents-in-law, Jose and Leonila Bermudez.
Pallbearers will be J.J. Mijares, Gaspy Mijares, Jesus Villanueva III, Eric Mijares, Jesus Villanueva, Jr., and Juan Lopez.
Honorary pallbearers will be Juan Jose Mijares, Marco Antonio Mijares, and Miguel Angel Mijares.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin.
