Laverne Wesley

           Graveside services for Laverne Wesley, 93, of Lufkin, will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Old Union Cemetery in Lufkin with Bro. Bill Hall officiating.

            Mrs. Wesley was born on September 4, 1931, in Apple Springs, Texas, to  the late Henry Chester Russell and Velver T. (Pike) Russell, and died Sunday, August 3, 2025, in her home surrounded by her family.

            Our beloved Mother/Nanny passed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy rooted in love, strength, and simple joys. She was happiest with dirt on her hands and a baby in her arms  tending gardens, rocking grandbabies, and filling our lives with comfort and color. Mother/Nanny had a gentle touch, but don’t let that fool you she could outshoot the boys and out fish the best of them, teaching her grandkids how to bait a hook and hold their own. She raised flowers, vegetables, and generations of family with patience and pride. Her love still blooms in the gardens she planted and echoes in every lullaby and hunting story we’ll keep telling. We’ll miss her steady hands and fierce heart, but her spirit lives on in every life she nurtured.

            She is survived by her husband of 77 years Bill Wesley; son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Jackie Wesley of Hudson; daughter and son-in-law, Felicia and Roshal Mooney of Lufkin; grandchildren, Phillip Loggins, Paige and husband Shane Dykes, Jason Wesley, Amanda Wesley; great-grandchildren, Lane Loggins, Carter Loggins, Jaycee Dykes, Marshall Dykes, Logan Wesley, Jackson Wesley, and Addison Wesley; 2 sisters; 1 brother; along with numerous nieces and nephews.   

            She was preceded in death by her parents; 1 brother; 1 sister; and stepmother, Della Russell.

            Pallbearers will be Phillip Loggins, Lane Loggins, Carter Loggins, Shane Dykes, Marshall Dykes, Logan Wesley, Jackson Wesley, and Jason Wesley.

            The family would like to give special thanks to all of her special caregivers, Lanette, Aida, Robin, Veronica, Carmen, Daphne, Denisea, Kathy, and Hospice in the Pines.

            Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Shafer Funeral Home.
