Memorial services for Marcia D. (Stolnacke) Griffin, 75, of Lufkin, will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in Lufkin with Reverand Ashley Cook officiating.
Mrs. Griffin was born on December 19, 1950, in Worchester, Massachusetts, to the late Earle N. Stolnacke and Dorothy (Jernberg) Stolnacke, and died Sunday, January 4, 2026, in Houston.
Marcia’s family moved from Worchester, Massachusetts to Houston, Texas in the early 1950’s. During their time in Houston, she would go on to graduate from Robert E. Lee. High School, in 1968. She had a lifelong love for education, which was made evident in her pursuit of knowledge, formal education and dedication to teaching. Following her graduation from high school she enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University where she pledged and joined the Sigma Kappa Sorority in 1969, where she also worked as a traveling advisor. She would later continue her pursuit of knowledge and received a Master of Education degree, from Stephen F. Austin State University.
In 1973 Marcia moved back to Houston and began her teaching career at Houston ISD. Previously, she met Samuel D. Griffin Jr. and they married on July 20th, 1974, spending 50 plus years together in marriage. In that same year Marcia and Sam moved to Lufkin where she began teaching at Lufkin ISD. Later she would go on to teach at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School teaching a variety of Subjects. However, knowing what a skilled educator she was, Hudson ISD recruited her to teach in their district. She continued to teach until her passing in January of 2026. Marcia was a master teacher. She could teach anyone anything. She was especially proud of contributing to high testing results Hudson ISD’s math program received in the state of Texas.
Marcia was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a valued educator and roll model for many children over many years. She also dedicated herself to traveling to Germany to visit with her daughter and grandchildren.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Sam D. Griffin, Jr. of Lufkin; daughter and son-in-law, Kari Leigh Griffin-Madeja and Thomas Madeja of Stuttgart, Germany; grandchildren, Lucia Madeja, Charlotte Madeja, Julia Madeja, and Annika Madeja, all of Stuttgart, Germany; brother, Paul N. Stollnacke and wife Sandra S. of Denton, TX; uncle and aunt, Donald and Pamela Jernberg of Wareham, MA; along with numerous cousins and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Mary and Samuel D. Griffin, Sr.; along with other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
