Richard " Dick" G. Hughes, Jr.

         A memorial service celebrating the life of Richard “Dick” G. Hughes, Jr. of Lufkin, will be held Thursday, July 25,2024 at 11:00 AM at Shafer Funeral Home in Lufkin, Texas.

         Dick was born in Houston, Texas, to the late Richard G. Hughes and Eunice Jessie Hughes. He passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, in Lufkin, Texas at the age of 88.

         Dick received a Bachelor of Science Chemistry from Southwestern University in 1959 and a MBA Finance from University of Houston in 1974. He started his career as a Technologist at an industrial drilling products company in 1970, where he worked his way up to Marketing Manager. From 1976 to 2003 he primarily worked as a senior executive in companies supporting the oil industry. After retiring and moving to Lufkin in 2013, Dick worked as a consultant at Angelina College in the Small Business Development Center until he retired a second time, at the age 80.

          As a devoted husband and father, he loved his family and was adored by them all. Throughout the years his family usually included a Boston terrier dog. From a very young age Dick became fond of Boston terriers and he is survived by his adopted rescue Dekker. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lufkin. Dick was an avid golf player and was an enthusiastic lover of all sports in general. He and his wife Patsy spent many hours cheering for their teams.

           Dick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patsy (Reed) Hughes; his daughters Elizabeth Hughes and Jennifer Waters; son-in-law Curtis Waters, granddaughters Lauren Waters and Ariel Waters; sister, Susie Ragsdale; along with numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
